“It can never be satisfied, the mind, never.”I wish to discuss what University professors do other than engaging in research and conveying crucial information. Effective teaching means helping to create in students our own driving curiosity and our own pleasure in learning. Teaching students how take part respectfully in the give-and-take of informed discussion is to create citizens who sustain democracy and contribute to our communities. As a professor of English, my focus is on teaching literature. Daniel R. Schwarz is the Frederic J. Whiton Professor of English Literature and Stephen H. Weiss Presidential Fellow in the College of Arts & Sciences.
